Oh no, yoyo's

2007 S, 62k miles, MT,

This morning after my 60 mile commute, I zoomed around a round-a-bout in 2nd, got some boost, then backed off to 30 or so and the car began misfire, lurch and run rough. Then the rpm's began "hunting"/"yo yo" etc. Check engine light on, of course. After work, more of the same. It was time to refuel so filled up and headed home (another 60 miles). Ran at 58-60 mph. Gradually, the rpm hunt range narrowed from 5-600 to 2-400 rpm, but never smoothed out. It was an atypical Kansas day for early May: 100* and a 30 mph headwind and I thought I was doing well to get 34 mpg with the a/c on. Contrasted with the 52 mpg on the way to work with the same tailwind, before the problem. What should I be looking for?

Maybe a loose air intake. Throwing of the air sensor. Ecu is trying to adjust for the fluctation in the air flow. Could be wrong though.
