Dremel holes in hood scoop to reduce engine/turbo heat: Good idea?

I have installed a Way Motorworks heatshield: Is it a good idea to put some holes in the air scoop to allow more air into the engine compartment to reduce some of the very excessive engine/turbo heat? ~Curious. Thanks. Nick

I did it a few months ago. With temps being over 100 here the past few days, I'm sure it can't hurt.

I cut and sanded the back of the hood scoop "screen" and opened up all the holes, it looks great and lets air in to every possible opening.

Water is going to get in there no matter what you do. I've just made it so more air can get in to cool everything. I have a high flow intake too, and more rain getting in hasn't affect anything either.

Opening up the scoop will allow some outside air to flow thru the engine bay which is a good thing. However, the biggest thing it does is to allow scorching hot bay heat a way to get out of there when you park. The total lack of venting that heat is what was causing scoop melting and hood paint discoloration. I've run the JCW CF scoop with no grill for 2yrs and had no real problem with debre that a damp cloth couldn't take care of. If you're running an open CAI then rain could be a problem.

When the dealer douses the compartment with engine degreaser he rinses it off with a garden hose anyways, and it shouldn't have any long term effects either.

I applaud your ingenuity, and it should function well too.

I had a scoop warp on my '09 pretty quickly after I got it. I got it replaced under warranty and then dremeled the holes out and 8 months later no sign of deflection, most of the time is has been covered in Plastidip too. On a cool morning or light moisture after a hard run you can see the steam rising from the scoop when parked like a dragon ready to breath fire.

Hood Scoop!!

Great idea, I think I will follow suit.....I am also installing the Forge BOV Kit this week and was thinking I would drill some 1/4" holes in my intake cover. I have a drop in K&N now. I think this would also offer a little more air...Any comments let me know.....

Honestly I'm surprised that to this day nobody has stolen my grill badge, mirror caps or antennae... all easy to remove.

Just did the dremell thing on my new CF scoop before installing. Replacement was nice and easy ( no clips broken on the original scoop, yahoo!). Now, this baby can breath...

This is what I just bought. Now I need to open up my vents in the scoop.

I bought a ALta air filter. the instructions said remove the scoop and take out the insert that is blocking fresh air into the compartment. i am thinking of removing both front grilles to get more air in there.. OH, for the guy that was worried about water.. the motor gets wet when it rains.. my mini almost floated away a few weeks ago.. water coming in the doors..

Yeah, I wouldn't pay for something that I can do for free. To each his own though.
