Speedometer Calibration

Where can I adjust the speedo?

It's off by at least 10 km/h for sure and the tires are the stock size.

I would like to calibrate it with a GPS if its even possible.

Also, the digital speedo reads differently than my dash speedo.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The difference is a percentage, not a fixed amount. The difference you stated would be more than 6mph off, and it's not that high unless you are going at a very high speed. It's intentionally programmed that way and there's no way to change it.

It's one of those many MINI items that people complain about that pretty much amount to a non-issue...

Just a thought. But take a GPS unit, and travel at a constant speed. What does the digital speed read, what about the pie plate? They should be very close to one another. Both of mine are the same and both are 3mph higher than what the GPS says, at all speeds. But, the scangauge speed is almost exactly correct.

That leads me to believe that the display speed is intentionally higher, but the odometer is correct.

If the pie plate is way different than the digital, you can move the needle or have it moved. It would be a great time to install the out motoring gauge face...lol

To expand on this explanation a little more. Most European governments require that the speedometer NOT show a slower rate than the car is actually moving. but do allow for a maximum of 10% + 1.2Kph per hours error on the car actually moving slower than the shown speed.

Now there will be many people here that state their speedometer on their other car (not a MINI) is accurate. I have had Chevy, Ford, Dodge, Nissan, BMW, VW and MINI vehicles and none of there were accurate. They all varied from what a GPS states the speed is. Thing is the MINI is the worst.

Also of note is that if you read thru the NCS Expert Threads it seems there is a way to turn off the displayed error. See line #9 of this spread sheet. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...=1&hl=en#gid=0

Another note for every one reading this thread GPS speed can vary as well depending on where you are and at what speed you are traveling. In Cities or on tree lined streets lose of satellite signals can crate as much as a 5-6 mile per hour change in speed shown when the reality is that the speed has not changed. This is due to dropping and picking up of satellite signals. But the reality is if most cases it would have an accuracy of better than 0.5 MPH.

Also of note on this subject is that the speed variation on a set of 17" tires is that from Brand New (full tread) to fully used (worn to tread wear bars) there will be a 1.2 to 1.4 % difference in what your speedometer reads. So at 65 MPH that means almost 1 mile per hour change right there. Of course the GPS Speed will not be affected by that wear of the tires.

on my 03/2012 CMS All4, the speed is off +1.9 MPH, constant at all speeds from 10 mph to 120 mph (in 10 mph increments), measurement done at about 2000 miles on car from new, so close to no tire wear, tire inflation was 42 psi front and 36 psi rear

i used an aviation gps and external antenna (12 satelites in view and tracking), with a stated accuracy of .1 mph, cruise control to get the car speed stable and out in open country (no trees or buildings) on flat, straight road

interesting that it is not a percentage, but a constant error

also, the digital and analog speedos are in perfect agreement across the whole speed range

I wonder at what speed this error kicks in. Does it read 8 at 5? And when you are sitting still does it read 3? Just wondering

both speedos read zero at rest, 10 mps is the slowest speed i measured
10 mph indicated is 8.1 gps
20 mph indicated is 18.1 gps
30 mph indicated is 28.1 gps
etc, all the way to
120 mph indicated is 118.1 gps

the error was constant

When I was calibrating the scangauge for speed, it shows the speed reported by the ECU and then the corrected speed displayed by the scan gauge. The ECU is reporting a speed 2mph lower than displayed by the speedo.

This topic has popped up repeatedly over the years. Here's a thread from another MINI board that covers it. Note the posts by "rincewind" - a poster who actually works in speedometer certification. He has the lowdown.
