Proper way to advance crank

I am walnut shell blasting my intake ports later this month and was wondering if anyone knew of a better way to advance the crank. Normally I would take one of the spark plug wires off and have a person in the car crank it and after one sec I would pull the neg bat terminal. There has got to be a better way. I have access to a TDC whistle so I know when at TDC for each cylinder I just can't help but think there is a more accurate way to crank the car than my method that I have always done.

Versus a breaker-bar and a socket on the crankshaft pulley?
That's what is suggested in the service manual.
