Brake pads & rotors - should I change now??
Hello all, I wanted to ask your opinion on the following.
Our car says we should change the brakes within the next 1k miles, but after further inspection it seems that we still have some life left in them:
These are the rear brakes:
Dealer replaced all brake pads 24,400 miles ago, how many more miles do you think we can still go with these?
Here is the rotor for the front brakes:
Should I change them for new ones?
Thank you everyone!!

Damn you just got them changed 24k miles ago? What the hell are you doing, romping on the brakes every turn? You should be getting 3x the amount of miles on these brakes. Sure change if you want or save up for something better and change the when there is nothing left. Also disconnect the sensors now so that you won't have to replace them when you finally wear them out.

rule of thumb for any disk brakes
when the pad material is less thick than the backing plate it is time to change 'em
here's a nearly new 07 front, with some white added to highlight the backing plate
and here's a very worn 02 front
another seat of the pants check for MINI OEM pads anyway, you'll note the new pad has very visible bevel on the edges. Note that when you can't see any bevel anymore you'd be about to the thickness of the backing plate
I'd be replacing the front rotors. I usually go 2 sets of pads to a set of front rotors on the MINI. To get technical the minimum thickness for the rotor is stamped or cast into the metal around the hub opening. But that's a pretty good lip .. time to go IMO.
Good chance you already tripped the front sensor if down to 1000 miles. Here you can see the two 'nubs' left after the rotor broke the wire in the sensor
last: only 1 wear sensor per axle, left front and right rear.
ever wonder what's inside the sensor?
the bottom is the part that is against the rotor. this one has had the wire worn off - broken - creating the open circuit.

+1...either a crack or accumulated brake dust.

That's weird, if you are still under warranty just take it in to service so they can check it out. Or check them yourself and if they are good then don't mind the service info.
