Strange Noise (Popping) or Thump
Hi all, was wonder if anyone has ever experienced this noise in their Mini? I hear this weird popping or thump noise when stopped I can even feel it in the bottom of my seat. It's located in the center more toward the rear. I doesn't seem to affect the drive ability. I also hear it when I park in the garage and turn the car off. It doesn't really bother me but just want to make sure if something is wrong that I fix it before something happens. The noise doesn't start until the car gets warm... Thank you in advance for your help.

So I was bored at work and was snooping through some older posts and noticed this one.
I too have experienced this as I stop, pull the e-brake, turn off the car. Then shortly following the car makes some odd thumping noises. I too started wondering what that was. I was parked in my garage and let the car remain in gear and released the e-brake. No noise. I believe it is slight movement that is created when the pads move ever so slightly against the rotor. Move how you ask? The brakes are cooling/heating from your drive and they will expand and contract which causes movement.
If you have already found your solution sorry for the long reply...

DMTL is potential source of noise...
Hey, PParker,
Following up on Spridget, I too had this noise occur a few weeks ago and was able to narrow down the issue by searching for "MINI fart noise" of all things!
Once I started to dig a little deeper and consulted my Bentley Publishers MINI Service Manual, I found a part called the DMTL which resides in the fuel tank and acts as a pressurization mechanism for detecting system leaks. It is possible that temperature changes and/or short duration drives facilitate some residual activity from this pump. It sounded like a series of "poofs" coming from under the back wheel well. Satisfied and confirmed that it's nothing to worry about.
Hope this helps if it is in fact the source of your mystery noise.

What MandB is talking about is likely what you are hearing. In my 2003 I could here that noise as well and I guess possibly even feel the slight vibrations... It did not do it all the time but there was an article I read in a magazine about it as well. From what I remember it was nothing to be concerned about.
