HELP with steering wheel radio controls

I am changing out my steering wheel to one with red stitching. I am moving the inserts from the old steering wheel to the new one. I have removed the inserts, but the round selectors don't pop out of the back like I thought they would. My question is can they be pushed out from the back to allow for sanding and painting of the inserts before putting them in the new steering wheel?

Wait what? Can you post a picture of what you are talking about? The buttons should have came out in one piece with the rest of the insert like so,

I don't want to paint the buttons or dials. I popped them out, and I think I did it without breaking them.

So does it look like what I posted? Also I am not sure why you want to paint them.

I may not like it when I get done, but the center insert was flaking. It was like it has some kind of rubberized coating on it. I want some red accents in the interior. I bought a black steering wheel with red stitching, and am going to paint the inserts red. I will order a red shift boot and parking brake boot as well. I will post a picture when I get done.
