My first mod was installing the Craven/Marshall boost and water temp gauge. (www.cravenspeed.com) To be honest, the boost gauge is more for fun than anything else, as opposed to a water temp or oil pressure gauge that could save your engine. But if you want it, go for it! I'm still having fun with mine.
The Craven/Marshall set up is top quality and matches the Mini interior perfectly. There is a thread with very detailed instructions in the How To forum.

or get one of the OBD2 to Bluetooth adapters and download the Torque app to your Android phone. You can display and graph anything your ECU makes available, datalog it, whatever. Also reads codes and can reset them too, and is portable to any car with OBD2. All told it will set you back less than $25.
