About to Pull the Trigger
So I have read up on the fourms and am about to pull the trigger. I just wanted to see if the people here think this is a good buy or not. I found a 2009 MCS with 18500 miles listed for $19500. It is in IMMACULATE condition, I cannot overstate this. Has connivence, winter and premium packages as well as aftermarket (professionally installed) tint and 3m protective film. I looked over the service history and it has had the aux water pump and battery issues I have heard about on hear (taken care of by MINI), but not the timing chain tensioner or carbon build up problems.
The real kicker to me is that the owner also has the extended maintenance warranty purchased that lasts until sept. 2015. I am a grad student who doesn't drive a whole lot (6k a year probably), just looking for something fun to drive while I'm young! Does this seem like a good buy? The only thing making me nervous is that reliability that seems to be an issue from reading these forums.
Also, I live in Michigan and this car would be outside in the winter, is this a major issue? I plan on buying winter tires/wheels at some point.

That seems a tad high for a 4 yr old mini. I bought my 2012 MCS last April with 14k on the clock for $22k. It has the sport package, panoramic roof glass, harmon karden radio, automatic, sport wheel and a few other misc options. Are you sure that includes extended warranty and not just maintenance? Have you done some comparison shopping online?

First of all, look at it like a used car. If the condition is nice, the options are what you want, and the color combination is appealing, great.
Now look at it like a MINI. Are you getting it from a MINI dealer, is it certified? Your warranty is either expired or nearly expired (4 years from date of original purchase). The timing chain needs to be at least inspected, that will be a big expense if it goes south.
I think that the price is a few thou high, but if it is certified, then it is only a little high.
I have a set of 16's with winter tires, and the car does fine in the winter. You will really appreciate the heated seats as well.
Have fun,
Mike
