Apples to oranges here, but maybe I can help. My Saab 900 had this same issue. Turned out to be the direct ignition cassette. I chased everything, and even put on my other spare DICs, but the problem stayed. A brand new DIC cured the problem. Where am I going with this? Check the ignition system. Start with new plugs as they are cheap and easy, then consider your coils. Sounds like your not burning the fuel with the popping exhaust sound to me.

I had this problem occur before with my mini (07 S). Replaced the vaccuum pump and it's been fixed since then.

Also check and make sure that the tube from the air intake filter box to the turbo is tight on the turbo side. Seems to be a common problem with these slipping off on the N14s. The tube slidding off is an easy fix.

Either clean then wipe the inside of the tube with hairspray or buy a new tube for ~190$. I opted for the hairspray and mine hasn't slipped off in a few hundred miles.

Do you have any check engine lights that pop up?

There's not really enough information here but I'm guessing you have an intake/boost leak somewhere. Get a smoke test done and see if there are any leaks in the intake tract.

One more thought.... it may not be breathing right if your Catalytic converter is worn out/clogged - dealer is madated to waranty the catalytic converter 8/80.
