Service Light

My service light is on. Has been for a while but, I didn't want to bring it into the dealer for them to tell me I need to do a $150 diagnostic, which is just hooking it up to an OBD scanner and charging me for that.

What exactly do they do when you bring it to the dealer? Is it just a tune-up or?

For anyone wondering, it's this light when you turn on the car.

Mine's red right now (probably bad and I shouldn't admit that), but what exactly do they do when you take it in? I'm not into someone charging me $500, or whatever it is, for a tune-up.

^I'm in the same boat. Service due "-3600" lol. I don't bother with it since I'm not under warranty anymore and do my owe services. Try to find an independent shop to reset it if you can...

What is it for exactly? Just saying, "service" doesn't mean squat to me, lol. I know it has it's own oil light, brakes, etc. Is this to check like spark plugs and such?

Both these tips may be for something other than what it causing you light but you may find it helpful to get in the menus and locate what is causing the indicator.

Or this,

Mine had the indicator and it was just a vehicle inspection that was due. Since I live in a state where they don't do vehicle inspections aside from smog, my dealer set it for about 50 years from now.

I have ~72,000 miles on the car. I just did an oil change, as per my other thread. Which turned out to be very simple and I appreciate all the help. I ended up get the 0w40 Mobil1 Euro Car.

Anyway, that's a different subject. Just trying to get my car up to date, lol. I need to do my back brakes. I want to do them myself, because the dealer or any other shop will charge me an arm and a leg to put them on.

I don't know if r56 has the same problem as r53s, but my service engine light came on when I needed to change my gas cap, because the seal was broken. I can't remember what cap the r56 has. My mechanic said that is always the first thing he checks when that light comes on for Mini's, and he was right with my car. Added 2 more mpg after I got a new cap.

You can use the BC / computer button on the end of the turn signal stalk to drill down into what, specifically, needs service: engine oil, front or rear brakes, annual inspection, etc. How to do so is in the owner's manual on my 2012...mine lit up for the front brakes, then an oil change (when due).

I'm thinking though, the "Service" light is literally just to bring it in and check on everything. Make sure the spark plugs, oil, fluids, etc. do not need to be changed or need to be. I think it's just a generic symbol that comes up saying, "take it in".

I'm just not sure if it's something that necessarily needs to be done. I might just reset it, if I can, and go on living my life, lol.

Use this to see what service is due. It will tell you specifically so you can sleep at night. It could be vehicle inspection, brakes, oil. Easy to do. May want to YouTube it for the first time.
