Engine sputters when cold

Hi all. I just recently bought a 2007 MCS with low miles. I noticed the engine ticking sound when idling. But after some research, I guess that's considered normal.

One thing I didn't notice before I bought it is that the engine idles rough, sputters and cuts out when starting the engine from cold. It usually takes a few starts before the engine idles normally. After that, it's fine for the rest of the day. When the engine is sputtering, it pretty much does not respond to any throttle input. I also get a code for cylinder misfire.

I am thinking I'll need to replace the spark plugs and wires. Can anyone suggest other causes for this?

could also have a carbon issue. i would do the spark plugs for sure too but you might consider getting a carbon cleaning first.

After some quick reading, I guess this will require some manual cleaning on the valves?

Exactly what mine did and it was the HPFP. Look for the HPFP thread. It's on the main page.

It looks like I have a couple of things to check, possibly fix. Does anyone know why either the problem only occurs during a cold start and goes away shortly after that?

Ill have to check the paperwork, but I recall when I brought my car in for inspection last year they replaced a sensor that they stated effected idling at cold startup. Ill see what I can dig up.

All of the above, plus coolant temp sensor. Happened to me and got so bad i needed to start on ether every morning. Turns out the car thought it was 149 degrees instead of the 45 or so it really was. Its unlikely because its summer but if you live in a cold area or high elevation i would try to find an obd2 reader and check the ect after its sat. Probably carbon or hpfp but just ad that one to the list to be safe
