Pre-Purchase Inspection

What should I look for in a pre-purchase inspection. Don't know if the dealer will let me take it to a mechanic to check it out. If so what is the least I should have him check and if it is only me at the dealer what should I check. The current car I'm looking at has about 5 months of warranty left.
Thanks

If the dealer does not let you do a PPI with a mechanic of your choice, that to me is a warning sign...if the car truly checks out, then they should have nothing to worry about if you are seriously interested in the car. Plus, it's not like they have to pay for the PPI.

I thought I'd offer my 2 cents on their behavior towards the PPI, but since I bought my MINI used and paid for a PPI from a private seller idk what was included...just make sure to get all the service records, if the car has 5mo of warranty then it is a 2011 or 2012 model right? So the timing chain might not necessarily apply to the N18 engine.
