Oil Leak at Turbo

Hey all, I need some thoughts.

Just in the past month I had an oil leak coming from the oil feed lines of the turbo. To mend the problem I bought the Detroit Tuned Super Kit and had everything replaced that came with it. I drove for a couple of days and everything is great.

Befor long, however, I started to smell burning oil again. After taking a look, it looks like there is oil blowing all over the inside of the Oil Feed Line Heat Shield off of one (or two) of the bolts in the back of Turbo. I will post some photos in a few minutes.

What are these bolts? What is wrong? And what should be done?

You have to fix the oil lines to the turbo. There are 2 and Detroit Tuned sells a nice kit for both. You will have to take the turbo to install the lines.

I have installed the oil feed line super kit from them already:

Are you talking about something different?

Here are some photos of what I am seeing.

Can you tell whether it is coming out of the turbo itself? It kind of looks like it might be coming out from around the compression fitting on the feed line, but hard to say from the photos.

Please remove the useless feed line heat shield to get a better look at the source of the oil leak. Could be a simple as under-torqued banjo fitting, or something more exciting.

a

P.S.: I installed the DT kit ~3K miles and 4 months ago. Torqued banjo bolts to 25 ft. lbs (instructions called for 22 ft. lbs). No leaks from the feed line since.

The line on the very top of the turbo has crush washers.. go to the dealer and ask for new crush washers... (very cheap) and replace them yourself... crush washers are very tricky and sometimes extra torque is required to keep them from leaking... shouldn't take you more then a few minutes to complete this task... I'm not saying that this is your problem, however crush washers can be very problematic, and it won't take you more then a few minutes to see if that fixes your problem...

the order goes
1 crush washer
2 banjo fitting
3 crush washer
4 bolt that goes through everything and into the turbo (30nm torque wrench setting is factory, going a little tighter won't hurt it)

good luck I sure hope this it is a quick remedy!!!! Let me know if it fixes it

the oil return line is the one on the bottom and there is an o-ring that could need to be replaced and is a little tricky and requires patience to replace... 10nm torque is factory torque on the bolt that keeps it in place...

I'm dealing with this. I just bought an aftermarket line and am halfway through the tear down.

I have come back with a report. The line itself was defective. I got a new one installed and we are driving again. I am going to keep my eye on it though, just in case.

Does anyone else have the Detroit Tuned Feed Line Kit? I would like to know if you have had good luck with it over the long term.

I do, 5K miles and counting w/out leaks.
If it was defective (a bummer due to re-install work), it would show up immediately.
I expect it will last long enough to be passed onto the next owner, but time will tell.

As the Turbo cars are getting older we have been seeing more of them.

Here is our stainless line kit that we've had great success with.

Just got mine in the mail and will continue with the tear down. Tonight the bumper is coming off and I might get it into service mode (because removing the lower DP heat shield w/o service mode isn't worth risking bending it in my opinion AND those screws were damn hard to take out and will be very hard to put back without the extra space).

I went with Detroit Tune's line because I am using their instructions and I'd feel super guilty if I didn't support that kind of consumer help with my wallet. Way's my guy, but I don't feel too bad considering I handed over a nice chunk of change for his excellent services last year and I didn't pester him with questions about this besides figuring out how much it would cost to ship an undrivable car to his shop. It's about $300 one way incase anyone is interested. Definitely worth it to me if I don't feel comfortable with a job (I'm looking at you clutch!!!) but one beer Monday night and I figured... 'If I can get the DP out, I can do this. And if I can't get the DP out, I can at least put it back together to send to Way.' And now I'm past the point of no return. =)

I've got around 30k miles on the DT line since putting it in. All seems good so far.

Ian - Good luck with the repair and let us know how you get along.

Jc - Thanks for the report! I ask because I was worried about how the upper portion of the line bends down. To me it looked like the line might be strained by the direction change.
