FMIC recommendtion?

I've been wanting to upgrade my intercooler for a while now and have been doing a bit of research. I've not really seen anyone say one is significantly better than another, but the price range on them varies quite a lot.

I've spotted a number of them on aliexpress for CHEAP. Granted, there's no warranty and i run the risk of poor craftsmanship (assuming it's generally going to be on the welds)...other than that, do i run the risk of killing the turbo/car? Fitment doesn't seem to be an issue with these either.

Thoughts? suggestions? Info on those that have aftermarket FMIC's?

Thanks!

Don't do it...especially summer coming up soon, you don't want heat soak and a POOR FMIC, even if you decide to tune your MINI or not. Look for used ones like Forge, Helix(I have this one), Alta, Tyrolsport, Wagner, or even Evolve. They usually go for around $500 give or take. Good luck.

some of these super cheap FMIC's can actually be worse than the OEM in terms of air temps. There was a local kid here that bought a $250 FMIC online from some place (don't know who) and put it on his car (not a MINI mind you) and once it warmed up to summer temps the vehicle seemed sluggish. Turns out after running the car for a short while the "upgraded" FMIC couldn't keep up. He put the stock FMIC on and his problem was gone.

Bottom line, don't cheap out. Yeah you might get lucky and find one that works ok, but its a gamble. And it could potentially cost you more in the long run.

I have an evolve but I was interested in the new Helix (still in testing) and the Forge was highly recommended. PM me if you want more specific info that I wouldn't say publicly.

My Helix stays about two degrees over ambient. Measured with a Scangauge II.

I've installed all the different brands. The Alta, and ebay ones fit the worse avoid them at all cost. I can choose any of them and obviously chose the Forge IC when I put it on my GP. Fit's perfect, and works great as I see about 2 deg over ambient at cruise on the highway.

Seen so many negative reports on Alta products :( I got the hot side boost tube for dirt cheap...seems that will be it though. Thanks for the info!

I have the Forge, works great. The only thing I wish is that the aluminum nipple for the outlet was a 1/2 to 1 inch longer. It would make it easier when connecting the OEM rubber/silicon charge tube.

I am interested in the new Helix design.

wagner

I have the wagner face lift/lightweight version that required some trimming on the back of the lower grille. I DO NOT as yet have any data on how well it is working, but it was 590.00 and readily available, fit was ok with the grille trimmed. Running it with NM air charge and discharge pipes

I have the Wagner core also, I cut the top tab off and didn't have to do any trimming! So far it has been a great core.

It's not full anymore. A LOT of people PM'd me. I can't add any more info. The general consensus is already in the thread.

*hint* Way is saving you trouble. I didn't listen to him because a killer deal popped up and I had to trim a little. But now that it's in, it's good. Gotta love basic mechanic parts without any moving pieces!
