Headlight auto-leveling?
Hi,
I've seen a couple of threads about this, but didn't find a definitive answer.
I have a 2011 MINI Cooper S with the regular halogen headlamps. I don't have the vertical adjustment roller on the steering column. The space where it should be has a "filler").
My dealer says they're auto-levelling. I'm wondering, is that true?
If so:
- Should they move up and down when the car is started? They do not.
- Does that mean that my car has the suspension sensors already in place?
- If the normal halogens can auto-level, why can't the $900 Xenon retrofit headlights?
- Which car then has the adjustment roller? Was auto-leveling an optional feature, even on the halogens?
Thanks,
Jaka

Thought so, thanks!
So, there are 3 types of cars:
1. with halogens, without auto-leveling, without manual electric leveling roller (such as mine)
2. with halogens, without auto-leveling, with manual electric leveling roller
3. with xenons, with auto-leveling, without manual electric leveling roller
Is that correct?
If so, what was the name of the option to upgrade from #1 to #2?

That would be the buying-a-Mini-in-Europe option, which is where it is compulsory to have either manual or auto levelling.
I think it all started when French cars had incredibly soft springing and so loading their trunks got the headlamps pointing skywards. In response, French automakers used to fit little tabs next to the headlight that the driver could flick down to alter the headlamp aim. Those gradually developed into interior adjustment devices which then became electric.
So it's a French idea - do you still want it? Whatever happened to freedom fries?
