R56 Intelligent Battery Monitor

Intelligent Battery Monitor
It's time to replace the OE battery in my 2010 S. (No nav or connected). My question is can I install a 730Ah agm battery without issue?
Or another way, does the 2010 N14 R56 have the IBS that needs to be coded for a higher capicity agm battery?
No, I don't care about 2011's or later n18 cars.ot r50's

Hi Richard,
You can tell if you have the IBS on your mini by looking at your negative cable...the IBS electronics are integrated in the terminal end of the negative battery cable. It is a box like addition to the negative terminal end on the battery cable and is very obvious.
If you have a simple cable leading to the negative terminal of your battery then you do not have the IBS.
If you find that you have IBS here is what Bentley says
"When replacing the battery in an IBS equipped car, register the new battery to the vehicle using the MINI scan tool. The IBS measures the voltage, current and temp of the battery and calculates the battery state of charge to optimize power usage."

Hello all -
First post here (although I've been quite active for years on the boards for all our various vehicles) as we've just acquired a 2011 MCS Hatch - and I'm already replacing the battery.
I'm pretty sure I've done my homework by searching here - as per the below post - but would appreciate a little confirmation from the group on the below.
Within two weeks of buying the car, I encountered a dead battery on four successive mornings and and determined 1) that the original battery (43rd week of 2010) was no longer holding a charge; and 2) that a new battery would not be covered under the MINI Next CPO program, the Extended Maintenance Plan, or Dealer goodwill (car was 2 weeks old). I was obviously overjoyed.
So I've popped in an H6 (Group 48) AGM (760CCA / 950A) and all seems well again - but I want to ensure that battery registration will not be required in my case.
I'm pretty sure that registration is not applicable to our car as it appears to me that the negative cable (pictured below along with the original Varta battery) has a conventional NON-IBS style terminal end, as opposed to the more complex IBS cable (also pictured, image as pulled from the internet).
So that I may go in peace, can I please just 'get a witness' here?
Thanks!

The original battery tested 'good, but needs a charge' on Advance Auto's hi-tech digital tester, but would show as 'weak/bad' on my 'old school' tester - and was clearly not holding a charge anymore. It was stamped 43/10 on the negative post so I guess it had paid its dues for five years.
I just wish it had been changed out as pat of the CPO process - on MINI's dime instead of mine - but I'm sure they would have put in some puny thing anyway.

Thank you for posting the pictures of the IBS. I was at Mini's on the Mack last weekend and I believe my battery went. (the key didn't work, because I believe the voltage was low) But I kept trying and got it started and got home but need to change it. Its the original battery that's 5+ years old. Luckily, my 2010 MCS does NOT have IBS so I'll just swap the battery tomorrow. I'm going to do the mid priced NAPA Legend. Better the POS they put in there. Thanks again.

So even without IBS there's a procedure??
I will say that I tried jumping it with another Mini and afterward my outside temp display went from Fahrenheit to Celsius and my auto locks stopped working. But no warning lights and I made it home 300 miles no problems, I just didn't shut the car off.

As indicated above, an 'intelligent' system knows the specs of the battery, its age, and its charging needs, and adapts the charging system to that battery. If replaced with a new battery, and unregistered, the system will keep charging based on the specs and needs of the 'replaced' battery, which may not be good for the durability and service life of the 'new' battery.
However, if it ain't intelligent enough to know in the first place, it ain't intelligent enough to change!
As a counterpoint, yesterday I had to replace the battery in my wife's E90 3 Series BMW, which DOES have IBS and was therefore registered at the dealer (about $75) immediately after I installed the battery.
Interestingly, the autolocks needed to be re-programmed after the registration.

I have a 2011 MCS with the comfort access key. The car will only recognize the initial button press from the key fob, but no such subsequent presses. A couple of minutes have to pass before it will work again. The same goes for touching the button on the door handle and trying to start the car without the key in the dashport. The car starts and runs fine with the key inserted in the dashport. I'very replaced the battery on the fob and I'm considering replacing the car battery. Has anyone encountered this problem with the comort access key?

I'm not sure if the factory batteries have any dates on them. Typically, aftermarket ones do as I'd assume part of it has to do with their warranties on them. How many miles are on it and do you have a spare key you can test out to see if it has the same problems?

We put all of our customers into a group 47 Super Start Gold from O'Reilleys, it's a 650 CCA battery and carries a nice warranty through O'Reilleys if you do have a problem. They are also about $150 and have been tried and true for us for over 6+ years.
As for someone asking about installing an AGM battery instead of a lead acid; you need to perform a retrofit and code it to the car with a dealer level scan tool.

Hi Bakerg4,
When you say to register a new battery with a Mini scan tool, Does it have to be Mini scan tool or can I use my $179 scan tool that also does air bag and ABS to register my battery?
Also if anyone was wondering if they have an IBS on their 2007 MCS N14, YES IT DOES
