Camshaft position sensor location?
Great site!
I have been reading for a while, and finally decided to join.
I am looking for some assistance locating the camshaft position sensors on a 2011 Cooper (N16 engine)? Which one is "bank 1" and which one is "bank 2"? I'm currently getting a POO15 code (bank 1) and some random rough idle issues especially when cold. From what i have read the timing chain issues that plagued earlier versions of this engine are not common to the N16. Thanks for any help you can provide.

It looks like they are right next to each other with one being closer to the firewall and one closer to the front of the vehicle. Any idea which one is "A" and which one is "b" or intake and exhaust?

Not all vehicles use a two camshaft position sensors which is what makes this a little confusing because the codes that comes up is a generic P code. I believe that the R56 N12/N16 engine utilize them because both the intake and exhaust side have variable timing.
The camshaft sensor for the intake side is the one that is further back towards the firewall on the intake side of the engine. It sits over the intake side camshaft. Likewise the exhaust camshaft position sensor is towards the front of the vehicle on the exhaust side of things.
Edit: If you pull them out or replace them both there isnt a special sensor the exhaust or intake side the part is the exact same. Just make sure that you plug the correct connector on the the correct sensor. Use a piece of masking tape to label them or only do one at a time.

The timing chain issues were a bigger problem on s model cars. The base model did not generally have an issue unless it was run with low oil. Check your oil regularly and you should be fine.

For the N16 engine the camshaft postion sensor is on top of the valve cover. #8. There are two of them. Bank one is the back side and bank two is the front side. Check to make sure they are plugged in all the way.
Same sensor for the front and rear section.
N16 engine ( look to then right )

Thanks for the diagram. I replaced the sensors, and the car seems to be running much better. I also threw in a new set of plugs and an air filter as well. I did notice some seepage from the coolant temp sensor, but I understand this may be as simple as replacing the o-ring. Again thanks for the replies and assistance.
