2010 vs 2011+ Purchase
Hi everyone,
I'm looking to buy my third Mini after venturing into the boring sedan world for the past two years... My past two Minis were a 2004 and a 2006 JCW. I'm now looking into an R56 and found a really nice 2010 in my area, but after doing some research it sounds like there were some pretty worthwhile upgrades in the 2011+ refresh (namely the engine improvements and some minor interior improvements like the stereo controls).
My question is, is it possible that by saving a little money getting a 2010 I can buy some aftermarket parts to make the engine more similar to the 2011+ model? I know I could technically pull the stereo and put an aftermarket one in as well, then I'd just have to find something to cover up the holes in the speedo...
Or am I better off waiting for a good 2011+ to become available?
Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions!

One of the big improvements with the 2011 was a revised PCV system on the engine which results in reduced carbon buildup. I don't know about the interior improvements, just happy with my 08.
I would see what you can learn about the 10, specifically any warranty repairs (fuel pump, timing chain, auxiliary water pump) and maintenance (frequency of oil changes, any carbon cleaning done). I would expect some maintenance on any MINI, like oil leaks, water pump, thermostat, turbo oil line, these issues were not corrected in the 2011 update.
If you like the 2010, look at it as a generic used car (condition, options, color, crash repairs). If it passes that test, then look at it as a MINI. There are plenty of threads here on this subject, lots of negative feedback on the cars (but not enough positive).
Have fun,
Mike

You did not mention if it was a 2010 MINI Cooper S or Base model.
The bad press is related to the 2007 - 2010 S models with the N14 engine (note, the JCW used the N14 through 2012).
If the 2010 is a Base model, the year (2010 vs. 2011+) should not be that big of a factor in your decision.
To answer your question: I say avoid the N14 engine, unless you can do your own repairs.
