Steering issue: creak and jump
I have a 2009 Justa with approx. 45k miles on it that has been manifesting a steering problem of late. It is not making any specific noise when turning, a la a cv joint/axle or wheel bearing would; I can do circles and can turn tightly in both directions with no noise. It is mostly right when I first get going, after the car has been sitting for a while, that it makes a groaning/creaking sound when I engage the steering wheel and randomly the steering wheel will jump or fidget when I am waiting at a light or stop sign; I hear a mechanical groan and the wheel will move a couple inches and then go back to neutral position.
I am thinking steering gear or power steering module, has anyone else run into this issue or something similar or know anything about it?
I am a good wrench and can do the service myself(not that doing anything on a Mini approaches the ease of servicing the '72 Dart I had in high school, lol), I am just looking for a little advice about what the issue might be before I start playing, "Let's try replacing this next...".
Thanks in advance! Minston
