The excessive smoking does led one to think of faulty turbo seals.

A bad PCV valve could cause smoke and oil consumption too.

That link redparchel shared completely points at the turbo in one way or another. The pcv valve isn't it for sure now because I just put the brand new valve cover on a few days ago, the old one however was clogged, but the issue of smoke actually got worse after that. It never smokes at idle. Always in heavy throttle. Then once I'm past the low rpms all of a sudden it hops off limp mode and gets its power back and pulls away and no smoke.

Like I said I had the same issue and replaced the diverter valve. Do not take the valve out unless you have a replacement ready because if it is broke it will really fall apart as you remove it. Also be aware and take caution when removing the valve as broken pieces can fall into the turbo. You can get the diverter valve from ECS for a decent price if you check with them. You can also go to Pelican Parts and find it fairly priced as well. Good luck and keep us informed.

I'm about to get the compression test and check the hoses and lines out here in a couple hours at our shop. I would be stoked if all this is just being caused by the diverter valve. Makes me wonder, since I haven't heard any real blow off noise in weeks, leads one to think that could indeed be the cause. Just didn't think it'd cause limp mode and all that smoke.

It's the turbo. Tons of play, and deep scratch marks, some oil in the inlet tube of course because the seals are bad too. So, that is it. I need a new turbo. Best places to search?

What a perfect opportunity to get more power. Maybe a hybrid or a bigger turbo and a tune!! A new oil feed line is a good idea too. Ceramic coat your downpipe and turbo manifold!! So much fun

How's that look guys? 20k miles on it, 500 bucks out the door and shipped...not too shabby I think

I don't think you're going to be able to fit your turbo inlet pipe because the JCW turbos have a larger diameter inlet, you're going to need the larger inlet pipe that goes to the air box. A JCW turbo goes for about $1595.95!

Excellent find!

Why is the re-manufactured Mini Brand Turbo so expensive compared to a brand new BorgeWarner turbo?

Because there are enough people out there that don't know any better to make it profitable.

Yeah I would assume that'd be the target for people who just don't research it up more and rush to a purchase when they could not only save but end up having something better at the same time. I just got pretty lucky in my find that's my look on it haha

Sorry to hear about all your troubles. I had both thpurbos go out on my BMW 335i with about 85k miles and the symptoms you're describing happened in my situation...
