Purchase Advice Wanted

My 2006 s has had a hard year. Non dealer mechanic was test driving after installing new timing chain at 50K and T-Boned someone. Not his fault but since the repairs the new windshield leaks and there are numerous rattles in dash and weird electrical issues (windows partially open by themselves, cooling fan runs for three minutes after turning off car, horn honking long and loud at random times), now the crankshaft sensor needs replacing and the headliner is collapsing, and the hatch won't stay up.

On Craigslist I have a choice between a 2013 S with no frills with only 16,000 miles and a 2011 JCW with all the premium goodies like sunroof, leather, HK sound, etc but 43,000 miles. The maintenance warranty has been extended until next year and it has a new clutch.

The JCW is more fun to drive, but right brain says to go for the low mileage. Both are asking $19k firm. Any advice? Have to decide today or the 2013 gets shipped to the mainland. (I'm in Hawaii)

I would suggest sticking with the '13 S as it has the N18 engine and the '11 JCW still has the N14. Although the N18 is said to be better it still has its quirks, but doesn't seem to have as many issues as the N14.

Is there a model that you would recommend? There are LOTS of different Minis for sale right now.

I was a bit dissapointed when I drove the '13, my 06 seemed to have more "personality", the '13 felt watered down somehow.

The 2013 S should have plenty of pep. The supercharged engine ended in 2006...

It sounds like you got used to your 2006 MINI S and its ways. The only other idea I have is to look at the 2013 JCW as it uses the N18 engine...it may have the "personality" that you're looking for.

Use the VIN decoder to see the options: www.bmwvin.com

When I bought my MINI, I had NO idea of the issues with the previous engines. I am happy to have a 2011 MCS with the N18. There were a few issues, but all were covered under the remaining factory warranty. Bought at 22k, now at 48k. Aside from the warranty work, just regular maintenance. I say go N18.

Like everyone said. Go for the n18 models unless you want to test your luck.

JCW. Worrying about miles and what options it has on a used car is like shopping for a second hand underwear model. They look the same the handle the same the just choose to wear last years style instead.
