Engine noise

Guys I am new to this world of mini and I seem to have found a rather weird noise coming from the engine. Very loud grinding on cold start. After some driving the noise will "go away". I have recently noticed a loss of acceleration during this warm up phase and typically after a bit of driving everything goes back to normal and I hear only a faint grind. I have zero issues with shifting.

any ideas? I figured it could be a clutch issues, but i want to make sure before i take the $2k plunge

You should post year and model, you'll get more help that way. From what you provided, could be a timing chain failure. If so, and it fails, is costly..

You have the right year, model and mileage for a failing timing chain. I'd take it to a good independent and get it checked out. Do a search on NAM for 'timing chain', lots of threads..

I have heard it will be responsible for a knocking noise, but this is a horrible grinding noise. Like bearings are failed somewhere. I wish I could post a video.

We have a timing chain and guide DIY here with some information. Would you describe the noise you hear as the "death rattle?" Info here.
