Check Engine light and some smoke from tailpipe...

A few days ago I noticed smoke from the tailpipe after starting the car up and when revving the engine up to about 3000 rpm. I know it consumes a small amount of oil so I wasn't too surprised--still, that was more smoke than I've noticed in the past.

Today the Check Engine light came on. Ran over to Advance Auto and they checked the codes, which came back as P0300, P0301, and P0302. They indicate cylinder 1 and 2 misfires.

Spark plugs only have about 12,000 miles on them, so I wouldn't think that they're ready to be replaced yet, but what do you guys think?

Would misfiring cause smoke, or is the oil consumption causing the misfire?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I understand the idea of the catch can, but I just walnut blasted the car in the spring. Wouldn't that suggest that that isn't the cause?

General rule of thumb is grey/blue smoke is caused by oil (valve seals or rings). Black smoke is too much fuel and white smoke is coolant from a leaky head gasket.

Tigger is right about the smoke. How do the coils look. Did you try swapping the coils around to see if the misfires follow?

Just swapped the old plugs and coils around. I've got a diagram that shows where I put which one. Cleared the Check Engine light.

We'll see if any codes come back up over the next few days.

BTW is Cylinder One the left-most as I'm facing the engine?

Affirmative. Far left is cylinder #1. Firing order is 1, 3, 4, 2.
