12 MCS P0012 and P0303
Left the house today, 2 blocks away, and engine light came reduced power. Got home pulled these codes.
P0012 timing over retarded and
P0303 cylinder 3 misfire.
Havnt tried to clear and drive yet.
I tried doing a quick search here and google, found a little but it seemed to be all with the n14 engine.
Few questions, is it more likely that this is 2 different problems? Or that the P0012 problem is causing the misfire code, like a vanos solenoid?
Any advice?
the n18 engine doesn't have timing chain issues like the n14 right?
The car has 50k miles on it now.
Thanks very much
Jeff

Ah, I just re-read your OP, I obviously read it too quickly. Anyway, could be a lot of different things. I don't remember what codes I got when the VANO solenoid died, but I'd be willing to bet that the two codes you have are caused by the same problem. Hopefully someone will chime in that is more familiar with those two codes.

This weekend I'll try to pull the intake vanos solenoid, and clean it, see if that helps.

We go over some information about the N18 VANOS in our DIY that may be helpful to you with this process. As suggested in the article, if you have determined you need a VANOS solenoid by cleaning or swapping side to side, replace both solenoids.
