R56 Do Gen1 MINI factory wheels support TPMS?

Nope , was not till about 2008+ R56/ R55 MINI models ( very end Gen 1 of the 2008 convertible ) that the inboard wheel TPMS system was initiated. Before that the TPMS was read off of the wheel speed sensor / ABS sensor. So you can take TPMS wheels or NON TPMS wheel and put them on your gen 1 MINI. No problems. Taking Gen 1 MINI wheels with tire and putting on 2008+ Gen 2 you will need to add TPMS senors in each wheel. They will fit most wheel systems from Gen 1 MINIs. Split year in 9/2009 for the car it goes on , so watch that also.

Makes these Gen1 wheels that I picked for a song all the better, TPMS cost notwithstanding.
#4
Welcome, on the older gen 1 style wheels its case by case, most fit but I found some dont, but the Huf branded orange sensors are smaller near the neck so they have a better chance. Whats wheels did you get and fitting with TPMS sensors ?

Yes,
They brought back the hollies for the 10 yr anniversary (2012) MINI R56 Cooper and they have TPMS in the wheels standard. So yes.

Dont think the R83 wheels will fit them as thats Gen 1 Wheel. From MINI : For vehicles with
Tire pressure display = NO
You would have to test fit one of the Huf brand orange ones as they are a hair smaller on the shoulders then the genuine MINI ones.

So it appears that the only real definitive way to know with certainty is to buy one Huf orange TPMS and take one wheel to a tire place to see if it'll fit properly? That sound about right?
The wheels currently have tires on them and I don't have the equipment to properly dismount a tire in my garage. I know Harbor Freight sells just the thing, but it takes up a decent amount of space.

Yea, that's the only real way. The Huf are a hair smaller on the neck I know that and will fit more then the Genuine , Almost fit the R90's we have on super sale , but sold out , as people were asking about these. Don't have any R83's here in stock otherwise I could mount one for you. Post up what you find out.

Dropped off one wheel/tire and a new Huf sensor with my tire guy this morning. He just called and said there's two small bosses inside the wheel that prevent the sensor from sitting flush as it needs to. I'm going to take a look when I go to pick it up, grab a picture if I can.
In any case it looks like the Gen1 r83 style wheels are a no go for a TPMS retrofit.

Wow this site stinks on mobile. Posting doesn't work on the first try, inserting pictures doesn't work at all, and neither does editing a post apparently.
In any case, here's the picture of the inside of the wheel. The gap is just too narrow to get the TPMS into.

I remember on some OEM MINI wheels in ~2007 there was some part number updated, might have been to change the wheel design to accept more TPMS sensors of the newer MINI, late in 2007 MINI introduced the mandatory TPMS in board sensors. ( For MINI without a spare wheel , or spare wheel and running runflats.
This might be the issue , older part number wheels

Well that's stange. ECS says the Huf orange sensors are smaller and more likely to fit, but that poster says the OEM sensors are the ones that fit.
ECS, is the body on the OE type sensor more able to fit into that small recess? Better pictures of the wheel are available in the thread here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...lve-stems.html

Yea, I think its was an OEM sensor on a newer part number wheel, in 2007 MINI changed part numbers on allot of gen 1 OEM wheels . We compared the bodies and the huf orange is smaller and little bit less broad on the shoulder to the head of the valve, thus should be able to fit more. Whats the part number on your OEM wheel, it might have the 7 seven digits or 5 digits stamped into the barrel or on the back wheel spoke, or near the back where it meets the hub. Take some pics , post up..... we will get to bottom of this strange and only 5 people know in the world questions.

Wheels aren't at my primary residence, so it was tough to get pictures, but this is what I've got. The first one is (I think) what the wheel is made from. The second and third don't look much like BMW part numbers as they're too short, but it's the best source I found. There is what appears to be a date stamp on the wheel though, and I think indicates that they were made in 2002. So if there's a revised version, these probably aren't them.
Yes, they need a cleaning.

Thanks for that.
Yes, the parts numbers for this one did not change , but yes , its older and most likely way before the tpms re design.
