R56 School Me on Transmission Fluids and Flushes

School Me on Transmission Fluids and Flushes
So my buddy has been prepping to do a transmission fluid flush and filter change on his e90 330xi automatic. So, since I'm coming up on 100k miles in my 08 R56S manual, I thought it was worth researching to see how the procedures vary, and how easy of a job it is on my car.
On the BMW automatic, the complete flush includes removing the transmission oil pan and replacing a filter, o-ring, and gasket, in addition to swapping the fluid.
In my research on the Mini (manual trans), it seems that there is no oil pan, nor is there a strainer or filter that needs to be replaced. The fluid flush is simply a drain-and-replace type of service.
Inquiring minds want to know... what's with the difference in the layouts of these systems? Is it a difference between automatic and manuals? Is there no need for a filter or strainer in a manual system? Do Mini automatics have a trans oil pan and filter? I ask entirely out of curiosity.
Thanks!

The automatics do have a strainer/filter and a pan to drain from, but the job requires a computer able to read transmission temperatures, as well as the tools required to fill the transmission.
The manuals just take ~2.5 quarts of gear lube, no filter, there are no finicky electronic solenoids to protect in a manual trans. Quick job to tackle yourself, if it's never been done you quite possibly notice a change in shifting feel.

Automatics have the filter : https://www.ecstuning.com/Mini-2008-..._Transmission/

Manuals just to the flush and fill till it pours out the top of the fill hole. Stick on the bottom of the transmission tell you the OEM fluid.

When servicing your fluid, check the label on the transmission that identifies the fluid your transmission requires. There are many options for replacement fluid. Choose the best you can afford and be sure it meets MINI's current specifications for your vehicle. All of the R56 manual transmissions require about 2 Liters of fluid. I suggest having 3 liters on hand, in case you spill some. We have a DIY that can help you change your fluid. It's under MINI > Tech Info (tab at top) > R56 Articles. Check it out as it goes over everything you'll need including torque specs. It's fairly inexpensive and should take about an hour of your time.
