r56 n18 getting a new engine
Dropped my cooper s at the dealership yesterday for a p0304 code(cylinder 4 misfire)
They have it diagnosed to low compression caused by scratches in the wall of cylinder 4. So today they let me know the engine would need to be replaced. It had about 71500 miles on it! It is covered by an extended warranty thank god. Apparently a new OEM engine is about $8000 installed so the warranty company (GWC Warranty) wants a used or rebuilt engine.
Anybody have any idea how that might affect the turbo or JCW tuning kit that my beloved Mini Cooper S?

My original turbo under went 2 motor changes without any issues, so you'll be fine. Scoring of the cylinder walls is no good. I've been there before and it's never fun, but glad they're covering it. It's not uncommon for a warranty company to source a used motor. We did this many a times at the shop I worked at. Good luck and let us know how she runs once she is all fixed up.

You have the stock turbo and just swamping it ? Just make sure they replace all the gaskets to it and seals on the outside.
Good to see they covered it.

Sand, what nonsense! Carbon deposits or broken rings can cause sandpaper like scoring marks, tell them you're going to fight them as there's no clear evidence of sand in the engine. The fact that they were in the process of covering it tells you they probably had second thoughts do to cost, them blamed it on sand, absolutely ridiculous! It shows you that the insurance company knows nothing about engines.
If theres no documentation by the dealer or shop mentioning anything about sand being found in the cylinders then you can win in Small Claims. Insurance companies can't just make up stuff like that without proof, no proof then their case holds no water or sand! They need to get their heads out of the sand!
