Mystery part found in LHS front wheel well. Need help to identify

Hi there,

Long time reader, first time poster.

I swapped tires the other day and found a lose part/small hose wedged just behind the LHS front wheel liner. Does anyone know what it is? It's a 2007 Cooper.

Thanks!

Yeah, that's what I thought first too but the water lines are clearly there and the washer is working. So, no that isn't it.

That is a transmission breather, only on the automatic.

Thanks! That's it #6 in the diagram. Funny thing, it runs well without it and probably has for a while. Any ill effects this could have had on long term health of the transmission?

My guess would be that it's there to prevent water from getting into the transmission, which would be a problem..

The mystery question is how did it get where you found it.

Thanks. That makes sense. Should I worry? Is there an easy way to check the transmission fluid for contamination?

Bad mechanic or previous owner. It's a Japan import, so history is a bit unknown. Currently leaking and I am in for a waterpump and thermostat housing repair. Seeing leaks on both sides Popped the vent pipe back on while I was checking the thermostat housing today. Once you know where to look it is kind of obvious.

Wish parts delivery would be as cheap and efficient here in NZ as it is in the US. Last time it was faster and cheaper to order from the US. Complaining at a high level here, can't have everything
