2009 Mini Cooper S - Running on two cylinders/help!
Hello folks-
My sister owns a 09 Cooper S with 80k miles.
She says it's been running "funny" for awhile, but recently got apt worse. I can the Code Teater (check engine light flashes when you accelerate), it says cylinder 1 and 3 are both misfiring.
I was recommended to do a scope test to figure out exactly the issue. Any experience with that? Should I bring it to the Mini Dealer for that? They want to do a $125 dignostic test before the scope test...
Or should I just start replacing parts like the spark plugs and the coils on cylinders 1 and 3. What would you do?
Thanks!

Start with a compression test and inspecting the spark plugs.
If that checks out then you can replace the plugs and move some coil packs around and see if the misfire follows the coil packs from 1&3.

I ended up bringing it into the dealership. I received HORRIBLE news.
Two valves were broken... They told me it was burning oil like crazy, the timing chain expanded, skipped teeth, and ended up braking. They said two valves broke in the process.
I was quoted $6,200 for repair. With a possible additional $900 if it needs to be sent to a machine shop..
GUYS - $7100! On a car we owe 9K on.. NO WARRANTY?!?
I am clueless with what to do next. I plan to take it to another shop for a second opinion... What do you guys think?

My Cost was 4,342$ at a mini shop that included the head to a machine shop nearby.
Needed one valve. Replaced timing chain since engine was apart.
Your xtra cost could be of failure of timing chain?
It appears the mini tech said with the extended oil change intervals the timing chains wear faster. I change oil every 5,000.
If you can find a local independent mini shop may do better.
