HPFP failure?

OK, stepped it up and bought a scan tool that will show MINI/BMW codes. This is what I have...after replacing my in-tank fuel pump today and having the same half check engine light and limp mode. I am now thinking the HPFP is my driveabilty issue. Sound accurate? Also, I may have an issue with the exhaust vanos actuator or solenoid, as I just replaced both sensors with new Bosch units. Thoughts?

Did the car have the normal symptoms of a failing HPFP?
  • Hard to start in the morning
  • Rev then sputter to low RPM at first start
  • After a short run, car starts normally as if nothing is wrong
  • Final step is failing randomly under normal driving conditions
Pump in tank sends fuel to prime HPFP which should hold fuel until engine starts and HPFP blasts fuel to injectors. I replaced mine with one of the $150 units from ebay ($1,000+ for a new MINI brand is ridiculous) and never had a problem over 2 years. There are a few members who rebuild them too with good success (about $350).

Good luck.

Yes, the first two HPFP's that failed on my 2011 had that list of symptoms. Both of those were done under warranty. I am thinking maybe this one failed in a different way. It starts just fine, but after driving a bit, and getting on the turbo, it will cut out, backfire, and kick this code. I have a new factory pump on it's way. Cost me $644.00, but I am scared of the aftermarket ones....too many failures. Glad you got a good one!

Just had a friend bring his M5 competition into the dealer that had same symptoms. Found out his low pressure pump (in tank) was failing.... not feeding the HPFP. Hmmmmmmm.

Might be worth looking at.

Actually just replaced the low pressure pump in the tank on Friday. It was the original at 125k, so figured it was worth a shot. That apparently wasn't the problem. I have also replaced the in-tank fuel filter twice for maintenance sake, once around 80k and most recently about 110k.

Hooked up my new scan tool yesterday and monitored HPFP pressure. Sure enough, pressure was requested at 1700 PSI or so, and was dropping to less than 200 when on it, followed by the low pressure code popping up and limp mode. Good thing my new HPFP is on the way. And I certainly hope that fixes my issue.

That new HPFP should take care of your issue. These new GDI engines are crazy with the super high fuel pressures they need. I remember working on old Chevy V8's with carburetors and you need a fuel pressure of like 5-8 psi.

Yes, I am pretty confident that will fix my problem. Old V8's are my expertise, lol. Have a bunch of those. Definitely a learning curve with this new technology.

I feel ya. I always had V8'S Several Novas , Monte Carlo, and others. My first foray into the new fuel injection turbos was a 2003 Dodge Neon SRT-4. Learned a lot with that. I have always loved the sound of European and German engines.

My 67 Chevelle Malibu. Have had her for 32 years now. Yes, definitely love the sound of her! But also really dig the sounds my MINI makes through the Borla with resonator delete!

The new HPFP.

The old HPFP.

Yes, the new HPFP fixed my issue. Monitoring with my new scan tool, pressure was as requested, and over 2,000 PSI when really getting on it. I don't know what this particular piece of the pump is, but this difference in depth of the "plunger" (?) could be an indicator of a failed or failing pump. Maybe this is common knowledge, as I do recall seeing something about this somewhere on the interwebs.
