P1497 very rough idle.

So, I've had this code for a while now. It comes and it goes, but now it's gotten much worse and is also accompanied by some others 2B64, 2B51, and 2B5F. It idles really rough, almost to the point that it's going to stall. While driving it, everything feels fine, but when I idle it goes crazy at cold start and before it warms up. After driving it a while, it seems to calm down, but you can still feel a slight jump to it and when I stop it jerks a little. The last time the code popped up, I ended up replacing my throttle body and PCV hose (it was cracked) and that fixed it for some time. I removed everything down to the throttle body again, but didn't see any cracks or breaks in any of the pipes, outside of a small hole in the bottom of the noise maker air channel (see below). I'm not sure if that's supposed to be there or not. Along with that, I have one of the clips to my cold air intake box broken off the back. Not sure if these two things could be throwing the code or not, but wanted to be thorough.

I haven't done a smoke check or anything like that (I'm not even sure how to), but the last thing I've checked is the VANOS solenoid on the back above the intake valves. I didn't see any noticeable crud on it, but it hasn't been replaced since I bought the car back in 2011. Should I replace them, do a noise maker delete, get a new air intake box? I'm not sure what's causing my issue, but the car is not very fun to drive at the moment. Appreciate any help.

I got some pictures of the solenoid, noise maker air channel, and a pipe that leads into the air intake box. Don't really think the clip (on the air box) plus this pipe are an issue, but at least wanted to mention it.

For anyone who is even reading this, I replaced the VANOS solenoid today and installed the Forge noise maker delete. This did not fix it, but now I'm getting just P1497 and 2B64 popping up. Not really sure what to do here or where the problem could be. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you solved your issue yet? I just ordered the solenoid and hope that solves my problem. I replaced my thermostat housing last December and when reinstalling installed the same noisemaker delete. I’ve driven the 08 MCS a few hundred miles since it was put back together and it was running beautifully. Then today it went to sh*t. Extremely rough idle, lurching while driving. A number of codes including P1497. I’ve got 213K miles and am the original owner.

It ended up being the timing chain for me. This car does some whacky things when the timing is off. The guard at the top and bottom was broken causing it to skip timing when idling, because it helps keep the tension in the chain.

Thanks for the quick response. Was it a gradual fault, or sudden? I took the MCS out for a spin today. Started out just fine, then accelerated hard and started to notice the roughness increasing over the subsequent 30 miles.

I would get the code every once in a while. Seemed to happen when the seasons changed, for whatever reason. But eventually it was constant and rough idle was present more for the first spin of the day. The more I drove it, the less noticeable it was, but it was still there.

Did you replace the chain yourself? If not, what did it set you back? Thanks.

I did not replace it myself, no. It cost me $800 for parts and labor. Where are you located?

I’m near Jackson Hole. I’ll probably do it myself. Thanks again.
