Frustrations dealing w/ AutoZone having an incorrect part

I've been having a fun time conversing with AutoZone, trying to enlighten them to the fact that they have INCORRECTLY assigned the rear strut/spring assembly intended for the Mini Cooper Countryman to the R56 hatch. I just thought I would share my conversation...and I will provide updates as I get them/if I remember.

HUGE thanks to njaremka for helping me figure this issue out, too. Here's a link to the initial thread, which also has the ride height specs listed, in case this has happened to anyone else.

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ml#post4621774

Also, if anyone feels like emailing AutoZone to tell them about this issue, it probably wouldn't hurt!!! customer.service@autozone.com

Here's the email chain so far (sorry, it's backwards - start at the bottom) (personal information redacted!):

Enjoy!

Dear Jeff,

We have response from the proper department and they state that this is a 1.5" -2" higher after installation and if your vehicle is lower after the time that has been use, we also now forward the additional comments to them as well.

If further assistance is needed please do not hesitate to contact us back.

Best Regards,

Alejandra

Thank you, and please do escalate this. There is no question about it that this is not the correct part for this car. As I mentioned my ride height in the rear has increased by almost 2", and per the Mini Cooper manual, this is out of spec by over 60mm. It is also a night driving hazard as my headlights are not pointing at the road.

Thank you.

Jeff

Comment Value :I needed to let you know that my mechanic ordered and installed this part on my car, verified with my VIN number, and it is absolutely not the correct part for this car. It caused my ride height to increase by about 1.5-2" in the back. I checked the ride height specs in the Mini Cooper manual to verify, and it is supposed to be sitting at 572mm +/- 10mm tolerance with 17" rims as I have. It is currently sitting at 633mm. After researching, the loaded strut assembly made for the Mini Cooper Countryman is nearly identical to this one and often confused for it - and per the Countryman manual, the spec ride height for the Countryman with 17" rims is 633mm +/- 10mm tolerance, so it is right at that exact ride height, which tells me this part is for the Countryman. Please review this part and make sure you have the correct part for the Mini Cooper Base listed so future customers don't have to go through the frustration I've been through with this. Thank you.

Ope, forgot to include my latest response:

OK - I'm not entirely sure of what you're saying, but if I'm understanding you correctly, you're suggesting that the ride height could lower by 1.5"-2" if the strut has gone bad. Honestly, this is a bit of a stretch. I understand that CAN happen, but that is a pretty unlikely scenario, and it certainly did not happen on my car. My car was more or less at spec ride height when I had the new struts installed.

When the new struts are installed, the car should sit at close to spec ride height - NOT 60mm ABOVE spec ride height. This alone should tell you this is not the correct part.

Please, review the Mini Cooper Base manual for the ride height specs. You could even do a simple test of taking a Mini Cooper factory strut and laying it side by side with this part. You will clearly see that this is not the correct part for the specs listed for this vehicle.

I promise I am not trying to argue simply to argue. This is an important mistake that affects Mini Cooper owners nationwide, and I would really like to see it get corrected.

Thank you.

Also, if you read this far, THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION OF ALL:

Any recommendations for reliable [budget] parts suppliers who DEFINITELY have the right parts catalogued for the R56???

Do you mean did I go to the store? If so, no I didn't - my mechanic ordered these.

Yep, this happens all the time with MINI. Autozone, Advanced, Amazon, Rockauto.... and all those other brick and morter general dont know MINIs and never will. They don't even have enough in the regions to care. Also the catalogs are built off incorrect data from suppliers. I see it all the time.

Thats why we are here.
