Adaptations/VANOS adaptations

Hi,

Diagnostics tool that I have is capable of reseting adaptations (I asume this is for fuel trims) and VANOS adaptations.
I can't get my head around why you even should bother with reseting it if ECU is learning itself every time you drive?
Does reseting makes it quicker for ECU to learn new data?
What is the porpuse of adaptation reset?
And if it is needed in some situations what is the correct way of doing it? Should engine be hot or cold when performing it etc.? And maybe it doesn't matter?
