Hello and posting about CEL P1338

Hello.
First time posting on this forum.
I've had many BMWs in past, and always wanted Mini, but never came across one until couple weeks ago.
Looked at 2012 Cooper S with few problems. Test drove and there was noticeable clunking over bumps, which I suspect worn out control arm ball joint and bushings (at this moment I didn't know I had to drop front subframe to replace control arm bushings. lol What a PAIN), and CEL was on.
Upon reading it with OBD2, it was P1338, which is in BMW term, 2DA0 - Inlet camshaft: Angular offset of the crankshaft outside of tolerance and 2C58 - Boost pressure control, shutdown.
Thought 2C58 is result of 2DA0.
Knowing this N18 engine (in fact all Minis) is known for timing issues, so I thought it would cost me about $300(parts only) for replacing timing chain.
So I bout the car and drove home.
The symptoms were, cranks about 3-4 seconds to start and rough idle. Once the car gets going, it drove ok. just ok. not great.
As part of troubleshooting, swapped intake/exhaust camshaft position sensor. No change.
Swapped intake/exhaust Vanos solenoid. To my surprise, it drove better after Vanos swap, but nowhere near perfect.
During the Vanos solenoid swap, noticed the exhaust Vanos was MUCH shinier than intake Vanos. Ok. Previous owner has done something to fix the CEL, but didn't work.
Searching on Google and forums... saw something about "reset variable camshaft timing adaptation".
Took my Foxwell NT530 (had it for my Cayenne and BMWs), and completed the adaptation reset.
....
....
Pray to God
....
....
Start the car.
Started instantly and CEL remained OFF!! YES!!!
It's been off for about a week now. YES!!

The first post must always posted with photo. Here she is. I really like how she drives. Really peppy and fun. :hi:
Next up is front control arm ball joints and bushings refresh.

I just had this code and it was a slipped timing chain. Heard that there was a class action lawsuit that extended the warrenty for timing chains to 100000 miles. If someone has any additional info on having this covered under warranty please let me know.

P01338

2011 JCW 45000 miles, had the p01338, car ran, was flat up to 3000 rpm then would pull, if I lugged it below 3000 rpm it would throw code. There was a noticeable cam chain noise. Ended up changing the chain, guides, tensioner ect. Also HIGHLY recommend dropping the oil pan to fish out the rest of the upper chain guide, mine the plastic TOTALY disintegrated and fell between the guides and would not let the chain tensioner fully tension the chain. Also pieces went to the oil pan and also found pieces in the oil pick up. Also take the cover off the oil pump front and check for pieces. Did all the work myself over 3 days,

I would talk to mini about reimbursement\. The N14 had a $30 mil settlement for this failure. I think the case stipulated MINI USA pay a couple of thousand to repair replace. However I don't think that would apply if done in your garage.

Sorry to hear. Props on getting it done yourself.
Timing chain guide failure on such a low mileage... what a pain.
I just replace valve cover gasket yesterday and upper guide looked fine. also replace the timing chain tensioner just in case...
Still feel like I'm running on borrowed time and will need to get to it in near future..
