R6 relay

Hey guys! Just bought my first mini and it's been a blast so far. Unfortunately, I have just run into an issue. The r6 relay in the engine compartment fuse box is constantly clicking with the vehicle off. When running or with accessories on it stops. What is this relay for? And any idea how to correct the issue?

If my memory serves me right. I had this issue with my R-56 awhile back and notice that my “CTS” coolant temperature sensor plug on the thermostat housing was not making good connection. Check the plug by unplugging the connector and re-connect it back in.

look at the photo below to show you where it is located:

Location of the CTS(coolant temperature sensor)

I checked it out, no luck. I put a multimeter on the contacts that energize the relay. I was getting a fluctuation of between 4 and 9 volts. I am not sure of the voltage required to actuate these relays, but I'm guessing it is fluctuating above and below that voltage. I discovered the problem totally by chance. I was digging for something in the trunk, and noticed the charger I had plugged into the trunk outlet was blinking... at the same timing as the click from the relay. I unplugged it and all is well. Now of I could figure out where I'm leaking oil from I'd really be doing well!

I didn’t know you had a trickle charger plugged into the trunk outlet as a charging method. Normally I would disconnect the negative cable at the battery and connect the trickle charger there. When was the last time you re-register your battery with you OBD II scan tool? Does your battery have an IBS(intelligent battery system)? Without re-registering the battery, your electrical system does funny things such as relays going haywire.
