Farting noise on engine shut off (2008 Cooper S hardtop))
Hey guys, this 2008 with 167k miles has a new motor and all peripherals a few years back and maybe 20k miles ago.
It's making this fart / mooing / quaking (like a duck) / kazoo noise (or however you want to describe it) on engine shut off and I hear something similar on moderate to heavy acceleration from a stop.
AC doesn't need to be on for this to happen.
I haven't had the chance to have someone turn car on and off while I'm under it.
I'm thinking the Friction Wheel. #3 in the diagram.

Ok i have a better video. Car has to be running for minute otherwise the noise is very faint. I was under the car having someone turn car on and off. It sounds like the center of the engine...like either the starter or the transmission.
I makes a similar noise when the car starts but its louder when the car is turned off after a minute of running or more.

Try disabling the vacuum pump and see.
The pump provides vacuum for the brake and the turbo waste gate. Disconnect BOTH (one hard hose, one rubber hose, both easily reachable from top) and see if the noise comes back. If that is the case, the hose at the vacuum reservoir and the solenoid might not be connected correctly.
Eager to know the result.

BTW, a bit of experience on the friction wheel / belt. On one cooper I worked on, it was making metallic tinkling sound. At the end, it was the belt. The non-oem belt has some imprint of manufacturer and part number on the smooth side for about 4-6 inches. The friction wheel DOES NOT like it and skip that on every rotation. I could see the friction wheel jumps up a bit at idle. I took the belt off and sanded away the imprint and finally eliminated the tinkling sound.

I'm gonna stand over the car and hold the vacuum pump and see if i can isolate.

No codes with autoenginuity with BMW upgrade. Not since the noise started nope.

Not the pump but the reservoir (#1) or the solenoid (#2).
It sounded like the solenoid is making the noise when engine is being turned off.
Either it itself is bad or the vacuum hoses are not connected right, There are two connections on each that u might easily mix them up when u disconnect them.
I know, it is virtually impossible to get access to them. It is just crazy engineering, or lack of.

Interesting. Well i haven't touched those lines in years but perhaps during installation of the dual catch can i shifted one those hoses.

Yes these engines are unnecessarily weird. Those French engineers... I'm gonna start a list of the stupid ***** you will only find on a French motor.

Solenoid is the #2 pressure converter. It opens and closes the vacuum to the waste gate. U know how they never call it what it is called.
Vacuum pump (on cylinder head) generates vacuum. The reservoir (#1 vacuum tank) stores vacuum. Then the solenoid controls applying vacuum to the wastegate.

I unplugged the battery first so as not to electrocute myself on the starter terminals and unplugged the solenoid.... Pic:

They cannot be connected wrong because theyve been like that for 3-5 years. I haven't touched them. Both small lines are plugged in as you can see un the pic but Ill check the rest. But if something was unplugged the car would likely throw a code or run like crap no?

RMA it, i bet someone returned it and said it was fine and never installed. Thus we trust them and cannot check every single box. People do that from time to time.

I feel your pain, I do. You guys get abused by some clients. Its not right at all.

We have sent this to hose suppliers and its on their list. Nothing new yet. Its weird because the one side hose I believe is bigger then the other side so no off the shelf stuff. Then it has that protection material.
That's what nice are we work directly with suppliers/original suppliers to inform them of issues and they can release into aftersales or create it. Then everyone benefits.
The other places don't do any of that and the manufactures just relies on VIO information for aftersales.
If I find a solution/ or we make solution I will post up
Vacuum tanks its older higher miles and the tank can leak on the molded points. You will hear it. Its like once replaced the life of the car, My guess heat cycles plays a part.
