Crank locking pin and TDC question

Want to verify some information regard cylinder 1 location being passenger side cylinder. Based on all information I've found this is correct.

Second when locking the crank, I have a screwdriver in the spark plug hole. Air comes out of cyl 1 while turning crank by hand so it's in the exhaust stroke. Pin locks crank before the cylinder reaches the peak of it's stroke. Probably another 1/2-1" of screwdriver traveling up past the lock point. Is this correct for TDC in this engine?

Yes, cylinder 1 is at the opposite end from the transmission, same end as the accessory drive belt.

The flywheel pin will lock the crank at 90° so all pistons are at the same height.

Crank will also lock with timing 180 deg out --- it rotates twice for each complete revolution of the cams. Correct position is when lettering on cams is visible from the top. Also, be sure to NOT rotate the crank CCW if you overshoot the locking hole a little bit --- unless you're gonna do an engine rebuild and disturb existing timing.

Why are you locking the crank, new chain kit?

One can was 180 out. So how do I determine which is correct? Piston height I'd assume. Checked all Pistons and they were at the same height. But please correct me if I'm wrong.

PO installed timing kit. One cam was 180. Vent valves.

Here's a detailed procedure for replacing the chain. It has all the answers to your questions. If you're sure there are no more bent valves, I recommend you get new bolts for the cam and crank sprockets, lock the crank, loosen the chain and start the procedure from there. DO NOT try to set timing without locking the crank, and DO NOT rotate either cam when the crank isn't locked.

EDIT: OK, my PDF file isn't copying. Here's a link to a BMW procedure with the same info --- https://bmwrepairguide.com/mini-r56-...er-n12-engine/
