2010 Cooper S: Keep or trade

Have a R56 N14 that I purchased new in 2009. Rarely driven for most of its life (30k through 2018) then gave to my parents when they needed a car. They put another 30K and now that they have a new X5, the R56 just sits there. The thermostat housing, coilpacks, plugs, and valve cover need to be replaced. I'll probably do the timing chain, walnut blast, and some other general maintenance items. I have aspirations of finding an aero kit, getting new wheels, adding some mods, etc but wondering if I'm better off just selling the R56 and getting a R53 JCW or 2011+R56 instead. This isn't a daily, I'm not a huge fan of the F style. Dealer trade is about 3500 and I'm seeing R53s and R56 N18s go for at least 8k.

Any and all opinions welcome.

Thank you.

If you enjoy working on the car, then modding it yourself might be more fun. If you don't like working on cars or don't have time, then buying one to the spec you want is always going to be easier.

IMO, depends on long-term ownership objectives and passion for these cars. Although never owned one, I'm not a fan of the R56 N14 engine and while I did formerly own a 2013 'S' in N18 engine spec, what I wanted before that became my search subsequently for a pristine R53. Not being your daily driver, I'd suggest buying the best example of whatever in series speaks to you most, then plan on selectively modding to suit your personal preferences.

My comparison is just between ownership of those 2 models, thus must be taken in stride subjectively. My former 2013 R56 (N18) was relatively low mileage having been bought as CPO unit from most-local MINI dealer plus bone stock (other than JCW cat-back exhaust) whereas my 2006 R53 (sig link) was highly modded by the prior original owner when brand new. Despite those differences, I think most whom have owned both might agree that the earlier R53 were more raw-boned and a bit more fun than those in series that followed. The sound of the Eaton M45 supercharger is intoxicating leading to "giggles" as it spools up without the typical delay of a turbocharger.

Regardless IMO, buying the best condition for age within budget remains a better option, along with verifiable documentation on service work. Old cars are often money pits. It remains my preference to throw $$ at one up front in purchase cost vs buying one that ends up needing a lot of repairs subsequently. There are plenty of YouTube videos out there to give you a sense of how an R53 compares to the R56.
