No communication with SZL

2009 Cooper S R56
118,000ish
6-speed N14

Just replaced the original clutch and flywheel. Went with OEM hardware. I got it back together and it drives, at least into Rev, 1st, and 2nd. I'm having an issue with the steering sensor (Dynamic Stability Control light along with yellow brake light). I tried reading the steering module with my scanner and it just says "communication error..." Then I tried using Tool32 and that also gave my an error. Oddly enough, no check engine light.
I've double and triple checked the connections at the steering rack.

Now I don't have a good feeling about this. From my understanding the switch is in the steering column. How can I troubleshoot this without just blindly spending money on more parts?

Is it ok to still drive the car while I work on this issue? I know something like hill assist and drive control will not be working, but will it make anything worse?

Thank you

tool32

DSC shows (well had) 2 errors:
  • 5DFB
  • 5E34
Turns out my steering wheel got rotated while the sub frame was out. While lining up the connection to the steering column the steering wheel got rotated some more. After it was all hooked up it ended up being 360 degrees wrong. The scanner that I had (ANCEL BM500) was not able to show the live data or even connect to the steering stuff. Ended up getting the Foxwell NT530 overnight-ed with Sunday delivery (bonus points for Amazon Prime) that was able to view the live data. After a disconnect, rotate, reconnect. All dash lights went away. Took the car for a test drive and all was working as it should.
