Engine swapping a 2011 Mini S Engine into to a 2011 Mini Base
Hey all,
I'm looking into swapping the engine in my '11 S mini into a base mini body. Reason is a few years ago i got into a not totaled wreck and there's some body and frame damage that I'm now finally getting around to addressing.
Problem is just to get the frame professionally looked at in my area is $800 to $1500. But I've found a Mini (2011 Mini Base) being sold locally that had a blown engine that's already removed and an otherwise perfect chassis for $500.
Both are automatics. only difference is the base has heated seats, moonroof, and a few other features the S doesn't.
I've actually already done an engine swap on the s before (bought a used one and installed arp head bolts and rod bolts and bearings) so that's not a worry.
My question is what should i do about the ECU's? the base's ECU will have all the coding and connections for the extra features but probably wont have a turbocharged tune that the S's engine will need.
Is it more worth it to just get the body repaired or is the engine swap doable?

Well, the engine swap should be easy enough, but you might lack some airflow to the intercooler. As for the ECU (DME); I'd checked the part numbers are the wiring harnesses; they should be the same. Move the "S" mini's DME with the engine; you'll have to move the CAS module & the key with the DME or the engine won't start. You will probably have to move the ABS module over too. The big problem is programming; most people don't have those tools to program modules, and since the DME talks to other modules in the car you may have some issues.
