I was all set to order an '07 S, but found an '05 I couldn't pass on. I'd still consider it if we had room for one in the garage

Once I have ran my '05 into the ground I will probably buy a R56 or whatever they are called at that point.

I double-checked with CR about the reliability data for the new MINI and here is their answer for those who may be interested:

The Buying Guide uses the previous year's data. It does not predict reliability for the redesigned Mini. The new dataset is in New Car Preview, where it says "Reliability of the old design hatchback has been average or better, but the convertible is below average."
Right now we're not recommending any Mini Cooper for 2007 - we haven't tested the redesign, aren't carrying over the reliability data from the old car, and the carryover convertible has below average reliability.

Consumer Reports

If you will look in the right place you'll find a summary table listing cars by category. The MC is bolded and recommended. If you look at the summary reliablity prediction table for 07 you find MC better than average, and MCS average, MC convertible worse than average, MCS convertible worse than average. If you look at specific detail pages they only talk about convertible.

I am seriously considering upgrading my 02 MC for an 07 MCS... I too was initially hesitant about first year cars and what not, but hey, I bought my 02 used in 05 with 15K on the clock. It was even manufactured in 2001, so it's really one of the first few cars that came out and you know what... no problems at all, besides all the rattling The engine still feels solid along with the clutch and gearbox and havent had any mechanical issues... so since I'm mentally ready to upgrade to an S, might as well go for it

OHNOES!!

12% of respondents have totally abandoned MINI as a brand because of the ugliness and horrible problems the R56 is having.

Checked earlier this week and the new Helix-mobile should be arriving in NY middle of this coming week, and at our shop whenever it is released and we are able to pick it up

I personally can't wait for it to come in, I have a slew of parts already in the shop ready to be installed on the car.

Just in case you were wondering what they were

Numero Uno

Number Dos

and most importantly this for the exhaust

+1

My '05 MCS is almost completely paid off but I will not jump in the "2007" band wagon and get a first year car.

I still have 2 years left in my warranty and really, really love my '05. Car has been great so far.

When the warranty expires then, I'll see if I want to keep my car or jump to a R56. Hopefully by then, factory AWD and DSG will be offered in the options sheet. I also want to see how the new engine holds in terms of reliability.

On order

Yes I ordered mine on Dec 8. Currently the owner's lounge says "En Route". Not sure when I will be getting the car. No luck tracking my VIN on WW shipping site.

I'll definitely order an S. I wouldn't mind having a pre-owned 1st Gen. MINI, but I'm really excited about the idea of (essentially) custom ordering an entire car - just for me. While it's possible I could find "just the right car" in pre-owned status, it's highly unlikely given my tastes and wants.

Order Up!!

No guts, no glory. If you're going to wait around for the world to "approve" your every purchase, you have a long boring life ahead of you. Make up your own mind...as I said before. Seems to me IF you wanted a Mini, you'd just go buy one. IF everyone said it was GREAT, and you bought it and then decided for yourself that it wasn't so hot, would it be OUR FAULT??
Hey, I reordered mine after the multifunction wheel mixup. Like I said...no guts, no glory.
As to Consumer Reports...of course they can't rate the car, as they haven't tested it. Does THAT fact (non testing) make it a bad car? NO WAY. Like I said....MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND.
I just read ANOTHER terrific review of the MCS in the March issue of Sports Car International. If that's not enough for you, maybe you should try and set up a meeting with the Pope.
