Question for previous owners of 1st gen MINIs

If your buying our bought an R56 and had a first gen car that was pullied and some other performance mods ... or maybe a JCW car or Dinan ...

It appears your looking at least at a 40bhp difference.

Until the aftermarket vendors do their thing ... if they can ... how do you feel about the loss in HP? 40bhp is nothing to sneeze at, its something you can feel. I know I wouldn't have bought a MCS without being able to go JCW and get the additional power.

Same question about the sports suspension or JCW brakes. You know that the aftermarket is going to have better suspension bits of BBKs so thoughts on spending the money on the more expensive suspension and brakes. For example, I did buy the JCW brakes and in afterthought, would not have spent the money if I had known then what I know now.

Thoughts?

I guess I am in that category as I have intake, 15% pulley, cat-back and sway bar and will be getting an R56 later this year. Without an ECU upgrade I think I am at around 195hp so that is just 20hp more than an R56. The gap could be less for normal driving when you take the turbo overboost into account. All the comparisons I have seen say the R56 is faster than the R53 so I do not expect my swap to an R56 to be too much of a compromise.

Originally I was planning on doing all available upgrades but have now started autocrossing and there is a lot to gain from staying in the stock class (I am completely uncompetitive in SM!) I expect to be very happy leaving the new car alone.

I have an 04 MCS/JCW with Alta intake and MTH tuning and 198hp at the wheels so I know I will feel the difference but I'm sure it won't be an issue. Why not?
Because I have already retired the 04 to weekend only duty and the R56 will replace a Honda Fit as a daily driver. When I get the R56 next week, there is NO WAY that the performance difference between the 07 and 04 will be an issue. In fact, I'm looking forward to it. With all the suspension mods I've made to the 04, it is no longer comfortable to drive on a daily basis so I, for one, am happy the R56 is more refined. I'm sure that the power will be more than adequate for the street.
