integrated universal remote question

I did not have integrated universal remote on our R53....

Our new R56 has it, and I just programmed it. It only works when the car is running. It will not transmit if the car is on accessory, or off.

Is this normal? Seems weird to start your car before you open the garage door. I hope my neighbors don't think we are trying to commit suicide every morning.....

It's not the way the Homelink system on my previous car worked. It was available all the time.

One workaround may be to turn the ignition on (no clutch or brake, two taps on the start button) and that brings the power on enough to make it work.

I wouldn't mind that. If not, someone could break into the car and open your garage.

That's also how it works on '05/'06 MINI. You don't have to actually start the engine; use it in the accessory position.
