Also boosted engines are often known to be programed to have the engine cooling fan run for a given amount of time to help offest much of the heat created from Turbos and SCs.

yes, most any aluminum block motor will generally run a fan but the OP mentioned a 'jet engine' sound. That's a pump running and not a fan.

Well I now my R53's cooling fan can easily be described as "jet engine" (as I have likened it to that so was just throwing it out there as a possible source of the noise.
Is it true that we're supposed to idle the car after running "spiritedly" in order to cool the turbo? Or is that just an old wives' tale?
IMHO, if you drive a turbo car hard in the last mile or so before turning it off, it could never hurt to idle it for a minute or so to help cool the turbos even though the Mini's auxiliary water/oil cooling pump will still run for a bit after shutdown.

Generally speaking, it is a good idea to run the engine a minute or so after being on the turbo for a bit. If you do some normal driving after being on the turbo, that should cover it.
It just helps to remove the excess heat generated by the turbo from all parts of the engine, including the turbo.
