Stock stereo questions

Hello everyone,

I am new to the Mini world and i have got to say in that this is one of the best auto forum sites around. I look forward to many, many years of insight.

My wife (we) just a '10 MCS convertible and I, err ahh, she (we) love it. Since this is her car, I can only suggest changes to her, but thus far we both agree that the stock six speaker system needs to be improved. It is fine for in town speeds, but not for the top down freeway (still working her on the wind screen). But my wife wants 'Dash' to stay original. In other words, I can replace the stock speakers and add an stock compatible amp at most. Which brings me to my questions...

What are the speaker sizes in the doors and the rear side panel?

Is the head unit 'aftermarket amp friendly?'

Is there a Sticky w/this info already on the site?

Since you already have the "stock" audio system, you may want to try the the front/rear channel swap (there's some threads on NAM so just do a search). A buddy of mine did it on my R56, and it's like night and day, greatly improved.

Your best bet is to head over to the NAV and Audio section for answer to your questions. All of them are answered in threads there, and many suggestions for add on equipment that keeps the car looking stock.

For freeway listening with the top down, I'd put the wind deflector as a higher priority. You may need it even after upgrading the stereo. With the wind deflector, you can hold a conversation on the freeway without shouting. Think of how much that would help the stereo.

Yes - but $500 for a wind deflector ? I was looking at it also - but can't justify the cost for a piece of plexi glass... Especially when I look at other wind deflectors for other cars they are all 200-250. why is the MINI one so expensive? Probably cause they know how much we love out MINI's and that we'll pay that much

You can use a 1st gen wind deflector (for '05-'08 convertibles), which is significantly lower price and to everybody's surprise happens to also fit 2nd gen convertibles. However it's still expensive for what it is. BTW, the wind deflectors are fabric (not plexiglass) with plastic/metal frame.

You might also check with brownflyer, who created an aftermarket wind deflector for 1st gen and was contemplating a 2nd gen version: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...nd-screen.html

Thanks RKW !!

I just spend like 20 minutes reading up on the brownflyer's windscreen vs the OEM one. I like the idea of not losing my backseat (as small as it is). Couple hundred dollars I can justify....still difficult, but I can do it....

I'm send him a message...we'll see Thanks!

I'm also interested in finding out if Brownflyer has created a new version of his windblocker - last time I hear, he was looking for an R57 to measure, but he was not finding any volunteers.

His product was so simple and elegant, it's a shame that he hasn't been able to update it to fit the R57s...

Keep us updated about what you find out?

A wind deflector does make a huge difference(it was a night and day improvement in my bimmer vert), but the stock Boost stereo is pretty iffy, too. There's a dealer aftermarket option if you want to stay under warranty coverage that I'm considering.
