2013 JCW Coupe With More Powerful 220 HP Engine

Hi All,

This Motoringfile article infers that a new version of the JCW engine (which has the variable valve timing and other improvements that were made to the current MCS engine during the 2011 model year) making an estimated 220 HP will be coming to the JCW Coupe next year. Basically, the new JCW engine would bring the JCW Coupe up to the same engine specs as the current 2011+ MCS engine (only with more HP of course).

I was just wondering if any of you that are interest in the 2012 JCW Coupe would rather hold out for the 2013 model with the more efficient powerplant? Seeing as the engine in the 2012 MCS Coupe and the 2012 MC Coupe already have the variable valve timing improvements, they obviously won't change (any/much) for the 2013 model year.

Nope. 208 hp is enough for me. I want my JCW Coupe now.

hmmm. If my coupe sitting at the port doesn't get on a freaking boat soon I may be inclined to wait for this!

I would not wait for it, yes it will be quicker, but the year after there will be another that is quicker. Find something you want and get it as if your waiting for the best one, you will be waiting forever.

I have a feeling you are on my boat - I recommend contacting your MA.

Pez, I called ASKMINI and wow, it now says in transit so I have a follow-up email in to my MA. As of Monday he showed I was still waiting on a vessel and I asked if they could find out what's going on.

Yep. Monday morning I wasn't on a boat.. Tuesday morning I was.. but it was a boat that was to arrive on 10/5

After checking all the schedules I found out I got on a boat earlier that weekend and the systems took a few days to update. You appear to be in the same situation. In fact I bet you are on my boat.. CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY. It is a K-Line boat so the WWL Cargo Tracking site doesn't work for it.

CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY is expected to get to Baltimore, MD on 10/3. Hopefully this is the boat you are on

EDIT: Nevermind saw your other post. Looks like you are on the Endurance. Grats!

I could be persuaded to wait. I am going to see what i think of the JCW test drive this weekend. I'm down for 220 H versus 208 H. I like HP.

An AccessPort tune will get you 220+ hp. AP with FMIC even more HP. You can get that now and not have to wait a year or more for what might be coming.

But the engine will be the advanced model with the variable valve timing. I think it would be better to have the stock HP rather than rely on tunes and such which inevitably will have warranty consequences. It's not worth the hassle.

And not only the variable timing feature, but changed(improved) turbo bearings and other features I don't remember what the other changes were as described in the article.

Here are some Motoringfile articles that talk about the new more efficient engine:

MINI’s Revised 2011 Engines In Depth

MF Review: 2011 MINI Cooper S Refresh

... I wouldn’t have considered anything but a JCW last year when looking at MINIs. Now after driving the 2011, the standard MCS is hard to ignore.

"Inevitably will" have waranty consequences? I think "could possibly" have waranty issues would be more in line here. First something would have to go wrong with the engine, it would have to be caused by the tune, and then MINI would have to void the waranty. On the three forums I follow I've only heard of one MINI owner having a problem. My point is that if someone is thinking about putting off getting a new car by a year or more for just an 11HP increase that might happen, they might want to consider some options. A local shop installed a FMIC in my JCW in an hour and 45 min., I loaded my AccessPort tune in less than 5 min., I'm probably over 230 HP, feels like more, my car runs great and I have it now. Seattle MINI so far hasn't been voiding waranties because of either AP or RMW tunes. Definately worth the hassel(?). Sure I'd rather have stock HP, but I'm not going to wait for a year or more for only 11 HP maybe. Could the tune cause my engine to go south? Could possibly, but most likely won't, and definately not "inevitably will". And I have it now.

Your right, wrong choice of words for sure. As I looked over the post it could have been worded better.

If or could possibly would be more appropriate. But I still think the wait might be more advantageous because of the updated technology that comes with that new motor.

I want to buy an R59 Roadster and think the new-and-improved VVT JCW turbo will be worth waiting for IMHO. Not that there is anything wrong with my 09 JCW Clubman motor . However, I would like to see a bit more high RPM power. The current turbo doesn't pull high up like the 1st gen SC JCW, but it has a boat load more down low and in the midrange.

the 11HP difference won't make it any quicker at all. its like if you add a pipe to the intake that says it gives you a dyno proven 10hp, then after its installed you notice nothing at all.

if the powerband has changed or the engine is smoother and has less problems then it will be quicker but its such a small amout I wouldn't let it change my mind.

I like the aftermarket pipe idea... Now with increased HP Ratings, it coils just pop the car one more notch higher in the Big Golden Book of Insurance!

Don't know much about this but I would think with an upgrade of approximately 11 hp Mini would list a faster 0-60 time (5.9-6.0 sec) for the jcw coupe. Does that make any sense?

Thanks PatM. By the way, I am still considering a JCW coupe (current car '06 MCS) and one of the difficult decisions for me has been the color combination.

I really like your new CR/BLK coupe. Any chance for some more photos? And, if you don't mind me asking, how do you like the black wheels now that you have had them for a while? Also, if I have followed your posts correctly, I believe this is your first JCW. What are your feelings regarding the new JCW coupe's acceleration etc. compared to your previous minis? A big difference in overall performance? Any turbo lag? I'm only used to the SC in my '06 - which I love.

To me, the HP difference is a non-issue. It's more the reliability of the newly redesigned N18 (or N20???) engine vs. the potentially problematic N14 engine that's currently in all JCW MINIs (and not just the Coupe). I owned a MINI with a N14 (non-JCW) and wasn't very happy with it (problem-wise, not performance-wise).

I will get more photos this weekend. I have been remiss. The wheels are great I made the right choice. The acceleration is wayyyyyy more than my 2009 Stock MCS. Wayyyyyyy more. If you keep the RPM up the turbo lag is non existent. I can sense it but very little by comparison to my prior car. This is my first JCW but I am very familiar with HP. I have a 2005 GTO 400 hp
