The base prices look good, but you're looking at $34,000+ for an equipped S. That's pretty steep, but it's a helluva good looking car. At that price though I would have to give very serious consideration to Mazda x-5.

I'm excited about it!! Can't wait to see it in the flesh! I have to agree with chaswyck on the MX-5, but it's hard to get over the 'smile' on the front end of the Mazda. I've owned 2 Boxsters and love roadsters! Been waiting for this to come out!

I know exactly what you are saying re the "smile"....I've been calling them
"clown" cars ever since that big black grill showed up on the Mazdas!

Well my wife drives a 350z roadster now and that was $47k when we bought it in '04. It's a great driving car but drinks gas like a truck so if she can get her open top fix on something smaller and more economical sign me up. I agree on the Miata, it's in dire need of a redesign for us to consider it.

Such is why my current Mazda dealer was throwing incentives like crazy for me to trade in my 2007 Mazda 3, but no amount could get me to stop grimacing at the 2010+ restyling. I even took the time to consider the hardtop convertible Miata but between that stupid smile and a lightweight RWD vehicle in Minnesota snow, it was going to be a very hard sell.

The Roadster is beyond hot. But I don't live in a climate that would make it a good daily driver, nor do I have enough reasons to justify owning two cars. Doesn't stop me from drooling though.

It's odd that the Coupe costs MORE than the Hardtop, but the Roadster costs LESS than the Convertible.

It's no backseat and a manual roof that makes the difference.

Like James, I'm surprised that the roadster is less, but very happily so.

I just figured that they'd go with the same logic as on the coupe, even if it made no sense.

I like the fact that rearward visibility is better than the convertible. Just make Ice Blue available, and develop an accessory hardtop that would let me give serious consideration to getting the S as my dd. The Works does seem a bit expensive to me, especially when you could mod the S for less and probably do it better than the factory.

I'm still waiting on Abarth pricing, though. Will make for some fun back-to-back test drives in March for me, esp. since they're right down the street from each other in N NJ.

So you are saying the coupe costs more than the hardtop because they had to remove the backseat or the roadster costs less than the convertible because they didn't nave to install a backseat?

Yes.

The lack of a power top should drop the price at least 600. Though I was surprised that they didn't increase the price like the coupe, just because it's a new model.

I'm guessing that the roadster will steal a good deal of sales from the convertible.

I want to see the roadster next to my R52. Looking at the numbers, the Roadster is four inches longer than the R52, and less than an inch shorter from the ground to the top of the roof. The width is within a quarter-inch of being the same. The Roadster is also only 45 pounds lighter than the R52.

I like the looks of the Roadster (in pictures, at least), but damn, I was really hoping for something smaller...

45 pounds is a good amount, though. I didn't know about the length, but I do appreciate the rear cross-bracing (at the expense of some practical space, imho), and the better rearward vision with the top down.

Plus, if you watch the video, it's fun to put the top down while driving at 40mph while going through the s curves.

Think I saw a Roadster here in n NJ yesterday on the way in to work. Which is possible in terms of location since US operations are close to me. Would there be pre-production ones already tooling around corporate?

I noticed it because it looked like the normal convertible had been smushed. I hope that's not too technical.
