CMS VS CMS All4 exhaust system

anyone know the difference, if any, between the exhaust systems on these two models?

the front muffler (flex pipe/2nd cat/resonator/mid-tube) has different part numbers, but the same picture (at realoem.com and sewellparts.com)

the JCW system requires cutting behind the resonator on both models

VIP has 2 different systems, for the CMS, a downpipe back and for the CMS All4, you have to cut the stock system behind the flex pipe)

NM Engineering has a CATBACK system, same part for both models

Millteksport has 1 system for both, but they have yet to mount a system on a CMS All4, supposed to have a CMS All4 in the shop "soon"

Quicksilver has 1 system for both, but minimania says it does not fit the CMS All4, Quicksilver is "getting a CMS All4 in the shop soon to resolve the issue"

grrrrrrr .....

i do not want to cut my stock system in case i need to remount it for emissions tests in the future, so i want a downpipe back system.

i know i could repair the cut and revert, but the idea is remount, test, remove the stock system until the next emission test

sooooo .... has anyone seen both exhaust systems and are there differences?

scott

It might be my ignorance talking, but I can't see how a cat-back exhaust could cause you to fail an emissions test. Provided you have the factory cats in place, I don't know what would cause a failure.

Scott, when I had the NM exhaust installed the other day and was comparing the instructions provided with the kit to the car's under body, the only difference on the install instructions were for the CMS (not for the CMS A4) as you have to relocate the forward exhaust support bracket. There are two support/protect brackets on the under body and the relocation is required in order to make room for the adapter provided by NM to join the OEM exhaust pipe with the NM supplied exhaust pipe. The NM kit does not remove any smog gear so the need to remove and install the kit in order to pass a smog test should not be an issue, unless they add increased exhaust note to the smog test!

i am interested in a downpipe back exhaust, eliniating the stock second cat and resonator.

and in the future possibly a replacement downpipe with "high performance" cat

it appears there is a difference in the stock exhaust system between the cms and cms all4, but no one has clearly stated what the difference is or why (in VIPs case) they can provide a bolt on downpipe back system for the s that includes a new flexpipe but require cutting on the cms all4 to reuse the factory flexpipe

I think the difference in the exhaust is that in an all4 it has to go around the rear differential and rear axles. The exhaust on the all4 bends down slightly to go under the rear axle. There is also the driveshaft going to the back of the vehicle and maybe that changes the exhaust routing behind the engine, but I'm just guessing.

If you are interested in a DP I would reccomend what I did... It's pretty loud but sounds FANTASTIC!

I have an Akrapovic DP, JCW midpipe (with all silencers cut out), and a JCW backbox... Cutting the silencers out made all the difference.

Here's a bit of revving:
