R60 Wind noise with roof rack
#26
The dealer will have them. When they washed my car, as I was getting it serviced, they ripped two of them off. Didn't notice until I got on the highway. They found one in the wash bucket and gave me two new ones. They said they always come off.

Just curious, being a cabrio driver roof racks are an alien concept around here.
You installed the roof rack and now it makes a nasty noise.
Seems to me if you're not using the roof rack at the moment, just take it off until you do need to use it.
It's biblical: If thy eye offendeth thee, pluck it out...or sumptin like that.

However here's a photo of a Mercedes SLK I used to have which I ordered with the factory roof rack prep (mounts in the top of the screen pillars and under the trunk lid). Then the optional extra roof rack rails ran completely clear of the aluminium folding roof from screen to trunk, so could even be used when the roof was down - though of course the manual said you would die instantly if you did this. It did have the downside that if it started to rain, you had to remove the roof rack and rails before you could put the roof up.
Sadly, that poor photo is all I've got left showing the rack. That is a racing yacht spinnaker pole on the rack, just before delivery - I always told people my company had a very enlightened policy on its delivery vehicles....

I actually fixed the whistle! there is a small squarish hole in the part where the pull down tab inserts, this square hole is the reason you hear the whistle, the air rushes through it and creates the sound, next time you drive cover it up and the whistle goes away, well it did for mine anyway. so now its actually nice a quiet except for just the rustling of the wind which is normal and doesn舗t annoy. very easy fix.

Hi, thanks, but I have read and tried that - unfortunately the whistle sounds high-pitched, I can mimic the sound when I open up the whole sunroof and then hold the bug screen back down. I've tried covering and removing all sorts of parts of the rack.

So I tried a dozen things trying to make the whistle of my roof rack go away: even spent $200 at the dealer to have them look at the problem - thinking the sunroof wasn't aligned or something. Wasted.
Tried removing the black strips.
Tried covering various places/holes with tape.
The only thing that has made much difference has been to put a pad on the first rail. I tested it with some pipe foam insulation for awhile. And now hade some custom rack pads made by a guy on Etsy!
Here's how they look. If you like them do a search for roof rack pads on Etsy to find the guy - ExtremeTshirts or gy6partsoutlet.
